The Athlete

Here at BugMuscLe, we believe being an athlete can mean many things.

An athlete is someone who is striving to improve themselves physically and mentally in a variety of ways such as flexibility or physical power, muscular size or agility, body composition or the mental strength to drive through barriers.

Who would be considered an athlete?

We believe an athlete could be anyone from a stay at home parent to a student to an entrepreneur. An athlete could be someone who enjoys recreational hiking or rock climbing, or someone who is paid to be in peak condition such as a combat sports competitor or a baseball star.

To wrap up, an athlete is someone who is trying to better themselves.

Our goal is to provide you with information that can help break through training plateaus; enhance body composition and from time to time just a good story for the purposes of encouragement or a good laugh. Whatever your goals are, we will continually strive to deliver sound training concepts that will help you to meet those goals. Please enjoy. And feel free to bring us your feedback!

Long Live the Athlete

As far back as the prehistoric ages mankind has had to exert amazing energy and resilience to survive. Prehistoric people were athletes by nature, not by choice. Living off the land as hunter-gatherers, early mankind had to run, walk long distances, climb, lift heavy amounts of food and hunt or be hunted. Humans have been squatting, vertical pressing, horizontal pressing, and using their torsos to resist pushing and pulling forces for millions of years.
They ate natural foods free from dyes, synthetic hormones, antibiotics, and preservatives. Oh, and guess what, they even munched bugs!
At BUGmuscLe we see the athlete as a living breathing machine. Like all machines, the human body requires dedicated maintenance to achieve and stay at peak performance. The athlete is trained to compete in various sports involving physical strength, speed, agility, or endurance. Most professional athletes are exceptionally well-developed and follow extensive physical training and strict exercise accompanied by a strict dietary regimen. The heart of our mission is to help all athletes accomplish his or her training, fitness and dietary goals.

According to Wikipedia, the word "athlete" is a Romanization of the Greek: athlētēs, one who participates in a contest or feat. The term may be used as a synonym for sports-people in general, but it also has stronger connotations of people who compete in athletic sports, as opposed to other sporting types such as horse riding or driving.
Athletes are sportspeople who participate in collective sporting events that involve, but are not limited to, competitive body building, mixed martial arts, biking, swimming, running, jumping, throwing, lifting and hiking. BUGmuscLe also recognizes the athlete as being any person who may be in a survivalist situation as well as those practicing yoga and other active holistic lifestyles.

Although there is a wide array of organized athletics that have been traced back to the Ancient Olympic Games from 776 BC, most modern events are conducted by the member clubs of the International Association of Athletics Federations. The athletics meeting shapes the structure of the modern Summer Olympics, and other prominent international meetings.
We would also like to acknowledge and give our “Thanks” to those unsung heroes who may or may not even consider themselves to be athletes. People such as our military, firemen, and those brave souls who jump out of helicopters into raging ocean waters to rescue drowning or stranded boaters and swimmers.

The Importance of Protein

Ladies and gentlemen, right now we are going to talk a little bit about protein.

Ever heard of it? Of course you have! That’s the stuff those steroid-mongers eat to assist them on their quest to grow a third bicep right? That’s the stuff that women should avoid so they don’t get “man shoulders” right? And of course, that’s the stuff that will guarantee kidney failure by the time I’m thirty years old. Isn’t this the protein you’re referring to?

If your beliefs align with any of the previous statements, you have likely been informed by those who don’t know, or those that have an agenda. Allow me to help simplify what’s going on with this “protein business”.

As humans, protein is our dietary source of compounds called amino acids. While amino acids are required for the maintenance and growth of lean muscle tissue, amino acids also have many additional benefits. In fact, to list all of the benefits and various requirements for amino acids would be far beyond the scope of this article and realistically would require one or more textbooks consisting of hundreds of pages’ each. However, here are just a few reasons to not hold back on your protein intake:

1) Connective tissue health: See, in our bodies we have tendons, ligaments, cartilage, bone, and even hair, skin, and nails that all require amino acids from proteins to be maintained and to flourish.
2) Neurotransmitter and hormone production: Neurotransmitters such as dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine all require amino acids to be created. These neurotransmitters are necessary for focus, drive, and mood health. Serotonin and melatonin are ultimately derived from amino acids and are required for restful sleep. Testosterone and HGH, two powerhouse hormones, are constructed using amino acids.
3) Digestive health and detoxification: Amino acids are required for the construction and maintenance of healthy intestinal lining, as well as detoxifying organs such as the liver.
Now, are we all getting the point? Protein is required for good health! Don’t skimp on the protein!
